Since 1912, Bay to Breakers has been the quintessential San Francisco experience—a race that is part world-class athletic competition and part city-wide costume party. Spanning 12K (approx. 7.4 miles) from the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Coast, this event brings together over 70,000 runners, walkers, and spectators in a vibrant display of cardio and chaos.
The Course & Experience:
- The Route: Starting near the Embarcadero, participants snake through nine notable neighborhoods, including the Financial District and the Haight-Ashbury, before finishing at the Great Highway.
- The "Hill": Steel your nerves for the infamous Hayes Street Hill, where the crowds are thickest and the costumes (from human centipedes to rolling tiki bars) face their toughest test.
- Golden Gate Park: Enjoy a scenic mid-race stretch through the park—just keep an eye out for the bison!
- Finish Line Festival: Celebrate your achievement at the breakers with live music, refreshments, and the legendary Ocean Beach party atmosphere.
Ways to Participate:
- 12K Run/Walk: The traditional course for everyone from elite athletes to casual strollers.
- 15K Breaker Bonus: For those looking for a little extra, this extended route includes an exclusive bonus medal and a beer at the finish line.
- Centipedes: A Bay to Breakers staple—teams of 13 or more runners tethered together by a bungee cord or creative costume.
