Table for One: The Best Spots for Dining Solo in SF

Food & Drink

Sometimes the best dinner date is yourself. Dining alone may seem awkward to those who have never done it, but it can actually be quite enjoyable once you stop feeling self conscious! Without the distraction of conversation, you can really focus on the taste and presentation of a meal.

Ditch an evening of lukewarm delivery service and treat yourself to lunch or dinner at one of these local restaurants. It’s a filling way to get a feel for some of the diverse neighborhoods in the city by the sea.

Kuma Sushi - Japantown

If you’re interested in checking out Japantown, lunch is the perfect incentive. Order sushi to go from Kuma Sushi on the corner of Post and Polk streets and enjoy it in Peace Plaza, located in the heart of Japantown. The plaza’s centerpiece is the Peace Pagoda, a five-tiered shrine and popular spot for photos. It’ll be a nice backdrop to your carefully-prepared Negi Kama. 1040 Polk St., Japantown

Seven Stills - Nob Hill

Of course we’re partial, but if you like creative fare paired with whiskey or craft beer, you don’t have to go far. Seven Stills is a local distillery and brewery that distills their own whiskey using craft beer. It might sound crazy, but once you’ve tasted the whiskey you’ll see what’s up. Best of all, Seven Stills Nob Hill is conveniently located in the lobby of Stanford Court Hotel. 905 California St., Nob Hill

Slurp Ramen - Chinatown

Ramen is a delicious soup of textures and flavors, but it can be a little messy and unattractive to eat while facing someone. That’s where solo dining and Slurp Ramen become the perfect pair. Enjoy Tonkotsu- and shoyu-style ramen in this unassuming spot located in Chinatown. 710 Commercial St., Chinatown

Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe - North Beach

This spot on Columbus Avenue has been a neighborhood staple since the 1970s, and despite its name, cigars haven’t been sold at the establishment for decades. It’s the perfect place to eat a sandwich and have a coffee or a beer in North Beach. You can grab a spot at the counter or outside and enjoy the view – it’s located on the corner right in front of the always-stunning Washington Square. 566 Columbus Ave., North Beach
