5 Ways to Celebrate National Dog Day in San Francisco

America’s love affair with dogs has changed how we travel, eat at restaurants and drink a beer. The country's appreciation for dogs is so significant, National Dog Day came into existence in 2004 and has grown in popularity every year.

At Stanford Court Hotel, we understand that dogs often travel co-pilot, so that’s why we welcome 4-legged friends with a fee (which comes with lots of goodies). Want to celebrate National Dog Day on Aug. 26 with your pupperino while in San Francisco? Let us count the ways.

1. Take me out to the ballgame

The SF Giants are celebrating the “dog days of summer” at AT&T Park by welcoming both humans and canines on National Dog Day. Bring your dog to the ballgame to watch the Giants take on the Texas Rangers at 1:05 pm Sunday, Aug. 26. The organization even has a pre-game parade and costume contest planned for the special day. Details here.

2. Isle of Dogs at the Alamo Drafthouse

Everyone’s favorite beer and food cinema will have a special screening of Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs stop-motion film on Aug. 26. Ten percent of ticket sales will benefit the ASPCA and guests will be privy to behind-the-scenes footage and conversation between the director and actor Bob Balaban, who is the character voice of King in the film. More details at Alamo Drafthouse New Mission.

3. Untethered Runaround

Dogs find pleasure in simple joys, and for most that means time outside. Give your pup all the excitement and smells she seeks at an off-leash dog park in San Francisco! See our special guide for the best off-leash dog parks in the city. This way you and your dog can explore the SF together.

4. Treat Fido to a Fancy Dog Pastry

If there’s a day to buy your dog canine biscotti, National Dog Day is THE day. Visit Le Marcel to purchase pooch pastries, brownies, cookies, or maybe a “gift basset” for your best friend. Le Marcel is located at 2066 Union St. in Cow Hollow, a 30-minute walk from Stanford Court Hotel. See walking directions.

5. Cruise the Bay with Your Seadog

For a truly dedicated outing of sightseeing and quality dog time, opt for a Bay Cruise on Blue & Gold Fleet, which welcomes canine passengers. Calm ferry rides to Tiburon or Sausalito are likely to be good for your pup, with dog-friendly places in those destinations. Set off from Pier 39 in Fisherman’s Wharf and take in sights and the history of the Bay, travel under the Golden Gate Bridge, and feel the year-round chill of the Pacific.
