San Francisco Attraction - Coit Tower

Travel Tips

If you're looking for a breathtaking view of San Francisco, Coit Tower is a must-visit destination. Located on Telegraph Hill, this iconic landmark is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike.

History

Coit Tower was built in 1933 as a tribute to Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a wealthy San Francisco socialite who left one-third of her estate to the city upon her death in 1929. The tower was designed by Arthur Brown Jr., who also designed San Francisco's City Hall and the War Memorial Opera House.

Features

The tower is 210 feet tall and offers panoramic views of San Francisco and the Bay Area. Visitors can take an elevator to the top and enjoy the 360-degree views from the observation deck. Inside the tower, visitors can also view a series of murals created during the Great Depression, which depict life in California during the 1930s.

The murals were painted by a group of artists who were part of the Public Works of Art Project, a New Deal program that employed artists during the Great Depression. The murals depict various scenes of California life, including agriculture, industry, and everyday activities.

Visiting Coit Tower

To visit Coit Tower, you can take a scenic walk up Telegraph Hill or take a bus or taxi to the base of the tower. The tower is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours in the summer months. Admission to the tower is $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 5-11.

While you're visiting Coit Tower, be sure to explore the surrounding neighborhood of North Beach. This vibrant area is home to some of the city's best restaurants, cafes, and nightlife spots.

Coit Tower is a San Francisco landmark that offers stunning views of the city and the Bay Area. With its rich history and beautiful murals, it's a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to San Francisco.
